Bought Furniture on eBay for Collection in Person?

If an eBay furniture listing says “Free collection in person”, the seller expects the buyer to pick it up. You can still buy it without a van: pay on eBay as usual, agree a collection date with the seller through eBay Messages, and book a bulky-item delivery that collects from the seller’s address on that date. This guide covers the eBay-specific steps — payment, messages, the collection code and cancellations — that make that work. For general Marketplace purchases, see the Facebook Marketplace delivery guide.

How eBay collection in person works

eBay describes collection in person as an option many sellers offer for large or bulky items. You pay securely on eBay at checkout, choosing collection in person as the delivery option, and then contact the seller to agree a time and place for the handover. eBay’s guidance is to keep that communication in eBay Messages so there is a clear record of what was agreed (eBay: Buying with collection in person).

Once payment is confirmed, eBay gives you a unique collection code — a QR code and a 6-digit code — in My eBay and in your order confirmation email. At the handover the seller scans or enters the code, and the order is marked as Collected. eBay treats this as proof of collection for both sides.

eBay’s payment methods policy says only payment methods offered at eBay checkout are allowed, with payment on collection available only in a limited number of categories such as vehicles, and direct contact details can only be exchanged after checkout is complete (eBay: Payment methods policy). For furniture, that normally means the item is paid for on eBay before anyone collects it.

Price the delivery before you bid or buy

Collection-only listings can be good value, but the transport is your responsibility. Before you bid or press Buy It Now, enter the collection and delivery postcodes and the item details in the OctoFetch quote form. You will see the price and the available route dates before you commit to anything. The price depends on the item, its size and weight, access at both addresses and the route, so it is only as accurate as the details you enter.

Auctions add timing pressure. When a listing ends, the seller will usually expect collection within a reasonable period. Check that the available collection dates suit the seller before you win, rather than afterwards.

Questions to ask the seller first

eBay suggests asking the seller about collection before you buy, while keeping contact on eBay. For furniture, the useful questions are:

    • Dimensions and weight: exact height, width and depth, and whether it comes apart. Measure your own doors, stairs and turns too.
    • Availability: which days the seller can be at the address, and how much notice they need.
    • Access and parking: which floor the item is on, whether there are steps or a lift, and whether a vehicle can stop outside.
    • Condition and parts: close-up photos of any marks, and confirmation that legs, shelves, fittings and screws are included.
    • Help at collection: OctoFetch’s standard service is driver-only, so someone at the seller’s address may need to help load a heavy or awkward item. Ask whether the seller can do this.

Sending someone else to collect: the collection code

eBay’s help says a friend or family member can collect for you, and that they should bring your collection code and show it to the seller at the handover. Decide before collection day how you want to handle this. Once the seller enters the code, the order is marked Collected.

eBay also advises buyers to inspect the item and only share the code once they are satisfied, and says that if the item is not as described you can ask the seller to cancel the order before the code is confirmed. A driver collecting on your behalf is there to transport the item, not to judge whether it matches the listing. So settle any questions about condition, parts and size with the seller in eBay Messages before the collection date, and ask the seller for recent photos.

When you book, put the handover arrangements in the collection instructions — including anything the seller expects at the door — so the driver knows what has been agreed. If you are unsure how to handle the code for your booking, contact the OctoFetch team before your collection date.

    If plans change

eBay says buyers can request a cancellation on collection-in-person orders up to 30 days after purchase, or until the item is confirmed as collected, and the seller can accept or decline (eBay: How buyers can cancel an order). Your eBay order and your delivery booking are separate, so if the eBay order is cancelled, or the seller changes the date or address, contact OctoFetch as early as possible about your delivery booking.

    Collection and delivery day

Ground-floor collection from inside the seller’s property and ground-floor delivery into yours are included as standard. Tell us when booking if either end is on another floor, has steps, or has restricted parking. Ask the seller to have the item ready, with drawers emptied, loose parts bagged and labelled, and doors or glass secured. Packing and protecting the item is the customer’s responsibility unless you add a packing option, and cover depends on the item protection option you choose, its eligibility, limits and exclusions.

Stay reachable by phone on the day in case the driver needs to confirm access or which item is yours. When it arrives, check the furniture before the driver leaves and raise any concerns straight away.

    Quick checklist

    1. Get a delivery quote and check route dates before you bid or buy.
    2. Ask the seller about size, condition, access, parking and help with loading.
    3. Pay on eBay and keep all messages on eBay.
    4. Agree the collection date with the seller, then book it.
    5. Decide how the collection code will be handled, and add the handover details to your booking.
    6. Check the item on delivery.
